Spokes Tuesday Transport Seminar 1

A series of four presentations to challenge and inform you about how we get around our cities. 🚴 🚦 🚴

This week’s seminar is Bikepacking or Cycle Touring? with speakers Richard Smith and Brigitte Masse.

Are you a bikepacker or cycle tourist?  Come along to hear how others see the world on their bikes and decide for yourself. If neither of these apply, find out which may suit your style best, or simply enjoy the discussion (see details below).

Gather to catch-up from 5pm over light refreshments with the seminar starting at 5:30.

Organised by Spokes Canterbury and Biketober.

Bikepacking - Richard Smith (5:30-6:20)
Spokes Core member Richard has done many bikepacking style trips in New Zealand and Australia with his wife Linda.  He has recently returned from doing the Mawson Trail in South Australia.  Richards' talk will provide ideas for local bikepacking around Canterbury and the wider South Island.

Cycle Touring - Brigitte Masse (6:30-7:20)
Biking the Via Podiensis (France) - or “How to combine the love of cycling, eating, and discovering new horizons”.
Pourquoi pas? Short of time but you’re in need of an adventure? Pack your bikes and travel the Via Podiensis, part of the Christian Pilgrimage route known as Saint-James way. Not without challenges and effort, but when your morning tea is a stop in a tranquille village for café au lait and croissant, and dinner consists of local specialties cooked by your hosts of the “gites”, the effort is entirely rewarded.
This bike trip in 2014 is etched in our memories as one of our most memorable holidays for the food, the people, the laughs, the scenery.  This talk is to give some insights on why we chose to do this trip, how we went about planning it, the highlights of the region we travelled, and some practical things about traveling this part of France by bike.
Brigitte is an outdoor enthusiast and enjoys all sorts of activities, including running, hiking, skiing, cycling and traveling. When it comes to holidays, it is quality over quantity and it must always involve some outdoor activities and new places to explore, and absolutely no stringent plan!
