Biketober joins with Days of Ice for a ride through New Zealand’s Antarctic history! 🚴🏽♂️ ❄️
This is a guided, family friendly, history-relevant ride to the Antarctic Centre and return (about 1¼ hours each way). You are welcome to join part-way through the ride.
We start at the Robert Falcon Scott Memorial for an introduction to Christchurch’s role in Antarctica. Then we cycle 12km to the Antarctic Centre along the Uni-Cycle cycleway, and then along the route for the soon to be built Wheels to Wings cycleway, dipping into the cycling tunnel at the airport.
After arriving at the Centre, we will hear from Antarctic experts and, after a stop for a coffee, we retrace our route.
Highlights:
- Antarctic Society Historian Jane Ellis: The Beginnings of Christchurch as the Antarctic Gateway
- New Zealand’s current role on the ice (International Antarctic Centre)
